Treasure Island Essay On the 27th November 2007, I attended a performance of Treasure Island at Derby Playhouse. During this performance, the design of one scene in particular surprised me: the first scene of the second act, in which Jim arrives on Treasure Island and meets Ben Gunn.  The creation of the Hispaniola ship and its movement was both memorable and surprising. Its creation was even integrated into the acting and melodramatic/musical style of the piece, as the actors built a small rowing boat from benches at the beginning of the scene and incorporated this into a dance. This served the dual-purpose of both entertaining the audience and creating the necessary staging. The main ship itself was on a small truck so it could be easily moved around. This ease of movement was then combined with the use of a revolve-stage, creating a surprisingly authentic representation of a ships journey over moving water. The projection of a moving map on a cyclorama at the back of the stage, showed the ships progress to the audience, therefore, effectively communicating the idea that the ship was moving. The lighting was also used to give a rippling light effect to give the impression of the suns rays on the oceans surface, which helped to make the concept of the journey more believable for the audience. The daggers were not modern in style, and therefore helped to communicate the period of the piece (eighteenth century) to the audience so the historical context of the scene was surprisingly authentic to the audience. The use of sound effects for the fire from the rifles also helped to achieve this.  When Jim arrived on the island, a green curtain was used to show the jungles foliage and split the stage in half. This communicated the location of the scene surprisingly effectively. Vertical slits had been cut into the curtain and Ben Gunn used these slits to great comical effect. The slits also facilitated Bens arrival onstage and helped to make his entrance surprising. There was an audible gasp from the audience when Gunn emerged from behind the curtain and as he continued to dart through the slits, the audience began to laugh. Another surprising element of design in the scene, was the use of a puppet held by an actor to represent the parrot. The puppet was on a long pole, which was then swung by an actor dressed in bright clothing to show the parrot in flight. This was comical to the audience and surprising as it was a new interpretation on the piece. The costumes also added to the authenticity of the performance, which was particularly important as Treasure Island is a period piece.  Overall, the performance was highly enjoyable with several interesting staging elements.

Moreover, we can see this happens again when he regresses. At the end of the book he writes maybe ill even get a little bit smarter Which means that even after he regresses he wants to e smart which means he starts to act like he used to before the operation. In his process of development, Charlie first learnt how to use a full stop. He even used it before the operation. The next thing he learnt was comma (,). At first, he used it incorrectly, but then after a while he learns how to use it correctly as well. Towards the end of the book, he forgets how to use the comma and st ops using it. A normal child first learns how to use a full stop/period. It is the easiest and most basic form of punctuation. Shortly after, children learn about the comma. Usually, it is harder for a hill to learn how to use a comma correctly than how to use a full stop. Another hard thing for children to learn is spelling. Much like a child, Charlie first learns how to use a full stop. It was the first punctuation he used and he even used dots before the operation. Moreover, he learns how to use a comma like a child, first he uses it too much and after a while he uses it correctly. During his regression, he stops to use commas all over again. Moreover, his usage of full stops regresses, he has worse sentence structures and he does not use any sophisticated language anymore. Furthermore, he has many spelling mistakes. Charlie was abandoned by his parents when he was a child. When he starts to recover his childhood memories, his personality changes and actually fits the profile of a typical teenager once he learnt something he think he knows everything, he is self-centered and arrogant. He also has serious trouble with women and he has some trust issues. His personality changes slowly (although when compared to that of a teenager it seems accelerated). First, he has problems with Alice. After that, he becomes arrogant and self-centered. He thinks that he is smarter than everyone else and that he can do almost everything without any help. However, when he has to do something, he postpones it or Just ignores it. For example, when he asks the Wellbeing foundation permission to work on his case, he stops taking an interest in it once he gets their permission. A normal teenager who was abandoned by his parents will experience similar problems to those Charlie has and fits the same profile. A teenager who has been abandoned by his parents usually prefers to work alone, and spend time alone. He will most likely eave some commitment issues and the average abandoned teenager will solve his problems by getting drunk or by getting high. An abandoned, teenager is most likely to have a very low CEQ or a very late CEQ development compared to a normal teenager. Moreover, a smart abandoned teenager will not grow up to use his full potential as he will be busy trying to find a mother/father figure in his life and try to make that figure love him by pleasing him/her. Much like an abandoned teenager Charlie prefers to work alone. He has problems with Alice. He is with Fay Just for the sex. He as no real feelings for her. He gets drunk all day and looks for another mother figure in his life Alice, and looks for her constant approval. That being said, his social skills are not as bad as an abandoned teenagers are. The reason of that most likely lies in the fact he is not really a teenager, he is something between a child and an adult and has a fine sense of both for the people around him. He does not want people to suffer as he did, he does not want to be alone all the time nor does he give up about the idea of female figure in his life. He has a relationship with Alice and sexual legislations with Fay. After his regression, his personality changes back to the one of a child; he is innocent; wants to be smart; wants to make everyone proud of him all over again. Towards the end of the book, Charlie begins to regress, his IQ and his CEQ drop, his profile changes back to the one of a child and his knowledge decreases. First, he loses his short term memory which includes knowledge about commas, foreign language and his academic knowledge. However, he does not forget his childhood memories nor does he forget the time before the operation, which is like his second childhood.

The survey also shows that 50. 0% of the workforce holds a baccalaureate (BSN) or graduate degree while 36. 1% earned an associate degree (ADN) and 13. % a diploma in nursing (AACN, 2013). There are multiple pathways available for one to become a nurse. Today, the ADN and BSN degrees are the most common pathway selected by future nurses. This paper’s primary focus will be to comprehend the competency differences of a nurse with an Associate’s degree in Nursing (ADN) vs. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN). ADN OVERVIEW The Associates degree of nursing was developed during the World War II around the 1950s to aid in the nursing shortage. Mildred Montage, is credited with the creation of the ADN program (Clainberg, M. (2013). It was in her doctoral dissertation, Dr. Montag who studied at Adelphi University proposed educating a technical nurse for two years to assist the professional nurse, whom she envisioned as having a baccalaureate degree (Clainberg, M. (2013). The ADN program provides core nursing curriculum with emphasizes on clinical skills. The ADN program, with its limited credit hours vs. BSN focused only the basics of leadership and management in terms of ancillary staff supervision. The additional course work enhances the student’s professional development, prepares the new nurse for a broader scope of practice, and provides the nurse with a better understanding of the cultural, political, economic, and social issues that affect patients and influence health care delivery. To prepare nurses for this multifaceted role, several components are essential for all baccalaureate programs. These components are liberal education, quality and patient safety, evidence-based practice, information management, health care policy and finance, communication/collaboration, clinical prevention/population health, and professional values (AACN, 2008). CASE SCENARIO The following patient scenario will describe how nursing care or approaches to decision-making may differ based upon the educational preparation of the nurse (BSN versus a diploma or ADN degree) Case study: Patient is a 40 year old Native American male with past medical history significant of Type II Diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Patient is non compliant with medications and presents to the hospital with a complex foot ulcer. He’s now status post incision and debridement and will be discharged home with a wound vac, prescriptions and follow-up appointments and referrals. RNs with all educational pathways are qualified competent to provide acute care for this client. An ADN nurse will educate the patient on the disease process, wound care, the impact diet, activity and medication compliancy will have on clinical outcome. A BSN nurse with additional education employs evidence based practice and critical thinking skills will collaborate with the interdisciplinary team and involve additional consults: Diabetic Educator, Dietitian, Wound Care Nurse, Social worker and Case Manager to evaluate the need for additional resources available to the patient in the hospital and the patients community setting such as setting up referrals for home health nurse and wound care clinic and resources to discounted prescriptions plans. CONCLUSION Graduates of entry-level nursing programs (BSN, ADN and diploma) sit for the NCLEX-RNÂ © licensing examination. The fact that new nurses pass the licensing exam at the same rate does not mean that all entry-level nurses are equally prepared for practice (AACN, 2012) The NCLEX tests for minimum technical competency for safe entry into basic nursing practice. Quality patient care hinges on having a well educated nursing workforce. Research has shown that lower mortality rates, fewer medication errors, and positive outcomes are all linked to nurses prepared at the BSN and graduate degree levels. The nation’s Magnet hospitals, which are recognized for nursing excellence and superior patient outcomes, have moved to require all nurse managers and nurse leaders to hold a baccalaureate or graduate degree in nursing by 2013 (Rosseter, 2012) .
